Gabion stone is used to fill wire mesh baskets for retaining walls, garden features, raised beds, seating and landscape structures. Our range includes slate, granite, limestone and cobble gabion stones in approximately 100–300mm sizes, giving you a choice of colours, textures and finishes for both functional and decorative projects.

Choosing the Right Gabion Stone

When selecting stone for gabion baskets, choose pieces that are larger than the basket mesh openings so they remain securely contained. Angular and irregular stones interlock well within the basket, while flatter pieces can be positioned on visible faces to create a more uniform finish.

For the best appearance, place larger or more attractive stones around the outside of the basket and use smaller suitable pieces towards the centre to reduce gaps.

Preparing & Filling Gabion Baskets

Gabion baskets should be installed on a firm, level and compacted base. For larger structures or retaining walls, the base and overall construction should be suitable for the intended load and site conditions.

Fill the baskets gradually and distribute the stone evenly to help maintain the shape of the structure. Ensure the basket is securely closed once filled and follow the basket manufacturer’s installation guidance.
